Revelation Childrens Ministries International

Volunteer Abroad in Uganda,
Africa: with Revelation Children's Ministries

If you want to volunteer abroad and you are looking for a life-changing experience that will benefit other people, then our volunteer programmes could be for you. Revelation Children's Ministries International base is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in Uganda, Africa just at the source of River Nile. You will be touched forever by the warm, friendly people at Jinja. Life here is simple, yet wonderfully rewarding. This is an ideal opportunity to volunteer abroad.

Who can volunteer

Revelation Children's Ministries volunteers should be typically enthusiastic, hard-working, self-motivated, proactive people who are able to work under their own initiative and as part of a team. They do not replace or take jobs away from local Ugandans - they assist them with the various projects running in the area around ,volunteers should also be realists - they should know they won't change Africa, but they hope they will make a difference to the lives of some of the local people

Age Range

Our volunteers are aged 18 years upwards, and are typically between 18 and 55 years old. Unfortunately, we are unable to consider applications from applicants under 18 years old. As a volunteer abroad, you will be part of the team of , Revelation Children's Ministries and it's important for you all to nurture the team spirit. You may well make some life-long friendships during your stay - and a number of previous volunteers will enjoyed their time at Jinja so much that they will returned for short visits.

The Volunteer Programme

DSC00877 (28K)Unlike many volunteering operations, our volunteer programme is not rigidly structured. It is really up to you what you become involved with when you reach Jinja. The local community has so many needs that we find it is better all round if volunteers find their 'niche' once they reach Jinja and have had time to talk to the other volunteers, the Coordinators, and our Managers, and also have been able to have a good look at the general area, the nursery schools, the primary schools, the secondary school, the health centre, etc. However, it often takes our volunteers some time to settle into life at Jinja. You must be prepared to be patient as the pace of life in Uganda is much slower than you will be used to.

Our volunteers will have the time of their lives, but a few may find it difficult to become fully involved. You will get the most out of the programme by being enthusiastic, resourceful and imaginative - and it's important to remember that you will get out of it what you put in.

The Projects

All of our projects are focused on finding simple, low-cost local resources to solve a wide variety of problems faced by the local community at Jinja East and the neighboring villages. We fully understand our volunteers' desire to 'make their mark' during their stay at Jinja. However, it is important to remember that, once our volunteers have left the programme, any project with which they have been involved must be sustainable (and also easily replicated) so that the members of the local community can continue to run it themselves. All too often we have seen Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) bring money and Western expertise to a project, only for the project to fail once the NGO has left because the local people have neither been given the training nor the money to keep it going.

Volunteer Teachers, Volunteer Teaching Assistants, and/or Volunteer Teacher Trainers for Primary Schools, Nursery Schools and Secondary School(s) and women groups around, Jinja Uganda, Africa

Who can volunteer?

Qualified volunteer teachers or volunteer trainee teachers of any subject at any level, although we will also consider applicants who have been educated to degree level. However, we do recommend that those volunteers who are not qualified teachers or trainee teachers study for a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) or TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) qualification if at all possible. It is important to have a genuine interest in making a worthwhile contribution and the ability to live in a rural environment while establishing a solid relationship with the local community. Enthusiasm for working with young people is also essential.

We would prefer our volunteers to make a commitment of a minimum of three months to coincide with the school term times

Volunteer Nurses, Volunteer Doctors, and Volunteer Health Care Assistants, Jinja Uganda, Africa

Who can volunteer?

Healthcare professionals who have had some post-training experience, mature medical or nursing students, and retired doctors or nurses interested in rural community healthcare are most welcome. Also, healthcare professionals with an interest in public health issues are invited to apply. We are not able to consider medical or nursing students doing their electives as there are no sufficiently qualified staff at the health centre to supervise them. Work or travel experience in less developed countries is useful but not necessary. However, unlike the education part of our volunteering programme where we can find projects for a number of volunteers, the healthcare section of our programme requires much fewer volunteers. Please be aware that the health centre has very few facilities, and some healthcare professionals may find working there limiting and frustrating

Environmental Volunteers, Uganda, Africa

We have quite a number of environmental projects, including tree planting, fruit tree propagation, vegetable gardens, fish farming, beekeeping, fuel-efficient wood-burning stove making, etc. Our environmental projects are not just located locally and could be anywhere within Uganda it can be difficult to provide full-time volunteer placements. One of the main problems, however, is transport which can be time-consuming and costly However, we would be happy for any of our volunteers who are working in education or healthcare to become involved in some way with one or more of our environmental projects.

If you are looking for a full-time volunteer environmental placement, we would need to discuss with you on the phone or via e-mail what your skills are and what opportunities could be available.
